The
concept behind those words comes from John Chiu, President of Tuzy-Muzy and,
obviously, a very big music fan. It is his way of illustrating how everyone
must function in perfect harmony in order for the business to be successful.
Everyone shares the vision that Tuzy-Muzy must be successful. Everyone must be
willing to work together to ensure that this happens. As any business owner
would quickly recognize, this is a concept that is working for John and his
team of 35. Imagine the cacophony of a band made up of 35 instruments playing
35 different songs! Individuals with ideas are encouraged to bring their
suggestions to management to help feed the success of the business rather than
employees with individual goals being rewarded for their own personal gain.
Tuzy-Muzy in its present incarnation
is very young, incorporated only in 1995 four years after John and his wife
Lily started in their garage developing their own line of freeze dried roses.
The Chiu's worked on establishing a clientele which had an appreciation for
medium to higher-end preserved flowers. It wasn't long until their customers
wanted matching greenery. John and Lily rose to the occasion. Then the
customers wanted special containers and other accessories to accentuate their
preserved treasures. John and Lily obliged them. Steadily the business expanded
until it was too big for the garage and a new location was secured in the
Pacific Circle area of Mississauga. Their next step was to take a floral course
so they could anticipate their client's needs. This
was a very pivotal decision, leading them to meet Bob Ross who has been very
instrumental in guiding them through periods of growth as have also been the
following AIFD designers: Eric Tay, Jackie Headecker, Joanne Plummer,
Kathy Mustard, and other major Canadian designers who offered significant
input. John and Lily's background as wholesale traders in their native Taiwan
proved very handy as they negotiated purchased and dealt through connections
they had been able to negotiate. They new facility was stocked with higher-end
permanent botanicals, dried flowers, and some home decor items. Again they
listened to their clientele; again they grew... meanwhile the band plays on.
